About Joe

Inspiring Teachers to Inspire Children; One Student at a Time

Joseph Clayton Zoller, a native of Port Washington and resident of Manhasset, died prematurely and tragically on November 5, 2004, at the age of 39. Joe was a graduate of Friends Academy and Fordham University.

Joe was a loving and compassionate human being who always had a big smile and a huge hug for everyone. He was a devoted husband to Amy Dawson Zoller, a loving son to Richard and Judy Zoller, and dear brother to Richard Jr. It is in Joe’s loving memory that the Joseph C. Zoller Memorial Fund, Inc. has been established to provide the opportunity to earn a Masters degree in education at Fordham University.

Since 2005 an annual golf tournament has been held as a tribute to Joe and to channel the energies of his many friends and family members into purposeful and worthwhile endeavors.

Donald E. Harkness, retired Superintendent of the Manhasset Public Schools, paid tribute to Joe as “a truly beautiful young man with lofty principles and extraordinary gifts, including a keen and inquiring mind, a compassionate, and sensitive soul, and a kind and gentle heart.” “One of his most engaging qualities was the openness of his mind,” Mr. Harkness continued. “Nothing was too remote, too controversial, or to inconsequential to be considered carefully and honestly. No one who ever met Joe could fail to feel deeply grieved and deeply diminished by the premature cutting off of the extraordinary promise of his life,” he said.

To date, six scholarships have been awarded to graduate students at Fordham University's Graduate School for Education. The Memorial Fund has been conducted under the governance of a nine member Board of Directors and retains outside counsel and a certified public accounting firm to oversee these activities.
